LinkedIn Matched Audiences: the 2026 guide
Your own data is the strongest targeting signal LinkedIn has. How to build audiences from company lists, contact lists, website retargeting, and engagement, plus the 300-member floor that decides whether a segment ever serves.

The short answer
Matched Audiences let you combine LinkedIn's professional data with your own, so you target real accounts and warm prospects instead of cold attributes. There are three sources: upload a list of companies or contacts, retarget people who engaged with your site or ads, or stream data in through a third-party integration. They sit on top of the same attribute targeting every campaign uses.
Every Matched Audience is governed by one rule: a segment must match at least 300 member accounts before a campaign using it will serve, and location is still a required facet on top. Build the segment, apply it even while it is still populating, and delivery starts automatically once it clears 300. This guide covers each source, the list requirements that drive match rate, and the retargeting options that turn engagement into pipeline.
The three ways to build a Matched Audience
Every Matched Audience comes from one of three places. Most B2B accounts use all three: lists for named accounts, retargeting for warm engagers, and an integration to keep it all fresh.
| Source | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| List upload | Upload a CSV of companies or contacts, matched to LinkedIn members once. | ABM and known-contact targeting |
| Retargeting | Re-reach people who visited your site or engaged with your ads, Page, or events. | Warming and converting engaged audiences |
| Data integration | Stream companies or contacts continuously from a connected partner tool. | Always-on ABM and CRM-synced audiences |
Company and contact lists
The two lists you upload yourself. Company lists power account-based campaigns; contact lists reach specific people. Both live under Plan, then Audiences in Campaign Manager.
Company lists (ABM)
- Upload company names plus each Company Page URL (linkedin.com/company/NAME) to lift match rate and accuracy.
- View company-level metrics through Companies Hub in Campaign Manager (Plan, then Companies).
- The backbone of account-based campaigns: reach whole buying committees at named accounts.
Contact lists
- Upload business or personal email addresses, or build the list from a third-party data integration.
- Emails are hashed (SHA-256) before matching, so raw addresses are never exposed.
- Layer job function or seniority on top to reach only the right people inside matched companies.
Use LinkedIn's CSV templates and clean your data before uploading. Match rates rise with more identifiers (company name plus Page URL, or verified work emails), and a list that matches fewer than 300 members will not serve until you add more or combine segments.
Retargeting: the engagement sources
Retargeting turns attention you already earned into an audience. LinkedIn can rebuild a segment from nine different engagement signals, most of them populated by spend you are already running.
| Engagement source | What it captures |
|---|---|
| Website visitors | People who viewed pages on your site, via the LinkedIn Insight Tag |
| Single image ad | Members who engaged with your single image ad |
| Document ad | Members who engaged with your document ad |
| Video ad | Members who viewed your video ad, segmented by completion percentage |
| Lead Gen Form | Members who opened or submitted your form |
| Conversation / Message ad | Members who opened it or clicked a CTA |
| Company Page | Members who engaged with your LinkedIn Page |
| LinkedIn Event | Members who responded to your event |
| Conversions API | Signals streamed from Zapier, HubSpot, Dreamdata, Factors.ai, Hightouch, Lytics, Segment, or Tealium |
Website retargeting needs the Insight Tag live.
Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag site-wide, but keep it off pages that collect sensitive health or financial data. Video and ad-engagement segments are the fastest to build because they populate from campaigns you are already running, so lean on them while a fresh website segment fills up.
Integrations and how lists refresh
How your data gets in decides how fresh it stays. There are two paths, and for anything always-on the streaming route is worth the setup.
Streaming (continuous sync)
- Connect a marketing partner or the Conversions API to add and remove records in near real time.
- Recommended for large or always-on audiences: no manual re-uploads, no campaign pauses.
CSV upload (static)
- A one-time snapshot. To update it you replace the whole list.
- Simple to run, but re-processing a replaced list can briefly pause delivery.
Predictive Audiences
Seed a Predictive Audience with any Matched Audience source (a company list, contact list, conversion list, or Lead Gen Form) and LinkedIn's AI models a larger set of members with similar high-intent signals.
It is the official successor to lookalike audiences, which LinkedIn has discontinued. Use it to scale past a matched segment that is too small to serve efficiently on its own.
The 300-member floor and the EEA limit
A segment must match at least 300 member accounts before a campaign serves, and location narrows it further, so aim well above 300. Segments still in the building state can be attached to an ad set; delivery begins automatically once the match count clears the floor. If a segment is too small, combine several segments in one ad set to get over the line.
One more constraint: in the EEA and Switzerland, LinkedIn only matches members who have opted in, so audiences there can be smaller than your list implies.
Matched Audiences best practices
Six habits that keep your own-data audiences serving, matched, and pointed at pipeline.
Lead with your own data
- Matched Audiences beat cold attribute targeting because the intent is already there.
- Make company lists, contact lists, and retargeting the base layer of your account.
Feed the match rate
- Company name plus Company Page URL, verified work emails, and clean CSVs all lift matches.
- More clean identifiers means more of your list actually reaches members.
Retarget the warm, always
- Layer engagement segments on every campaign so no impression is wasted.
- Ad, video, and form engagers are the cheapest audiences you already paid to build.
Keep segments above 300
- A segment under 300 matched members will not serve. Combine small lists in one ad set.
- Refresh lists so audiences do not decay below the floor mid-flight.
Sequence brand, then convert
- Retarget the people who engaged with your awareness ads with a conversion offer.
- Warm audiences convert several times better than cold prospecting.
Mind the Insight Tag rules
- Keep the Insight Tag off pages that collect sensitive health or financial data.
- Confirm it is firing before you rely on website audiences to serve.
LinkedIn Matched Audiences FAQ
- Custom audiences built from your own data combined with LinkedIn's, via list upload, retargeting, or a data integration. They let you target named accounts, known contacts, and warm engagers instead of cold attributes.
