LinkedIn Ads reach & frequency calculator

Estimate how many impressions your budget can buy, how much of your audience you may reach, and how often each reached member may see your ads.

Uses your budget, CPM, audience size, and reach assumptions. Not a Campaign Manager forecast.

Plan delivery with assumptions you control.

Budget and CPM estimate impressions. Expected audience penetration supplies the reach assumption needed to calculate average frequency.

The short version

Impressions ÷ reachAverage frequency
Reach ÷ audienceAudience penetration
  • CPM converts budget into impressions. It cannot tell you how many unique member accounts those impressions will reach.
  • Expected audience penetration supplies the reach assumption needed to estimate average frequency.
  • Compare the result with your own operating ceiling. LinkedIn does not publish one universal ideal frequency.

How the reach and frequency math works

LinkedIn defines reach as unique member accounts receiving at least one impression. Average frequency is impressions divided across the member accounts reached. Target audience size is larger than actual reach because not every eligible member is served an ad.

The calculator first estimates impressions from budget and CPM. It then applies your expected audience penetration to the target audience size to estimate unique reach. Average frequency is impressions divided by that reach.

Budget and CPM alone cannot identify unique reach. LinkedIn's own forecast also uses objective, audience, format, bid, schedule, historical performance, similar advertisers, auction simulations, and member activity. This calculator stays transparent by asking you to enter the reach assumption yourself.

Worked example: a $10,000 campaign

At a $10,000 budget and $80 CPM, the campaign buys an estimated 125,000 impressions. If the target audience contains 100,000 member accounts and you expect to reach 40% of it, estimated unique reach is 40,000.

Estimated impressions
$10,000 ÷ $80 × 1,000 = 125,000
Estimated unique reach
100,000 × 40% = 40,000
Average frequency
125,000 ÷ 40,000 = 3.13x
Average daily spend
$10,000 ÷ 30 days = $333
Cost per 1,000 reached
$10,000 ÷ 40,000 × 1,000 = $250

With a preferred maximum average frequency of 3.5x, the example remains within the user's selected ceiling. That comparison is a planning preference, not a universal LinkedIn benchmark.

Reach and frequency metric reference

Every output uses transparent arithmetic. The only reach assumption is the audience penetration you enter.

MetricFormulaWhat it means
ImpressionsBudget ÷ CPM × 1,000Estimated number of times the ad displays
Estimated unique reachAudience size × expected penetrationMember accounts expected to receive at least one impression
Average frequencyImpressions ÷ estimated reachAverage impressions per reached member account
Audience coverageEstimated reach ÷ audience sizeShare of the target audience estimated to be reached
Cost per 1,000 reachedBudget ÷ estimated reach × 1,000Spend required to reach 1,000 unique member accounts

Reading your result

Use the estimate as a budget and audience sanity check, not a delivery guarantee. Actual results vary with objective, format, placements, auction pressure, member activity, audience expansion, schedule, bid strategy, and creative.

If frequency is above your preferred maximum, the arithmetic gives you three transparent levers: lower impressions by reducing spend, increase estimated reach by widening the audience or penetration assumption, or revise the ceiling based on your campaign objective and measurement plan.

LinkedIn offers seven-day frequency caps for some Classic brand-awareness ad sets, but availability is still rolling out. A campaign-level average across a longer date range is not the same as a seven-day cap.

Reach and frequency calculator FAQ

LinkedIn defines average frequency as the average number of impressions shown to each member account that received at least one impression. In this calculator, average frequency equals estimated impressions divided by estimated unique reach.
